A warm pint of milk after a long drive is a quick way to spoil a good pitch. Choosing a caravan gas or electric fridge is therefore about more than keeping a few drinks cold. It affects how freely you can tour, how much battery power you need, and whether your food stays properly chilled between campsites.

For many UK caravanners and motorhome owners, the choice comes down to a traditional three-way absorption fridge or a modern 12V compressor fridge. Both can be excellent, but they suit very different touring habits. The best option is the one that matches where you stay, how often you move and the electrical system in your leisure vehicle.

What does a caravan gas or electric fridge mean?

The phrase can be slightly confusing because many caravan fridges are capable of running on more than one power source. A traditional three-way fridge can normally use gas, 230V mains electricity and 12V power while travelling. It is often described as a gas fridge because LPG is its most useful off-grid fuel source.

A compressor fridge is electric only. It generally runs from a 12V battery supply, although it can also be supported by a mains charger or 230V hook-up. Rather than using heat to create cooling, it uses a small compressor similar in principle to a domestic fridge.

The right question is not simply gas versus electric. Ask whether you want the flexibility of LPG for longer off-grid stays, or the efficiency and strong cooling of a compressor system backed by a suitably capable leisure battery and charging setup.

Three-way gas fridges for flexible touring

Absorption fridges have been fitted to caravans and motorhomes for decades for good reason. When set up correctly, they are quiet, practical and unusually flexible. On a serviced pitch, you can run one from mains electricity. On travel days, the 12V setting helps maintain the temperature while the engine is running. Once parked without hook-up, LPG can keep the fridge cold for days.

That is a real advantage for holidaymakers who enjoy basic certificated locations, rallies, festival pitches or a few nights away from mains power. Gas use is usually modest, especially in mild weather, so a properly sized gas bottle can support the fridge alongside cooking and heating for a useful period.

There are trade-offs. Absorption fridges cool best when the caravan or motorhome is reasonably level. They can also struggle more than compressor models during very hot weather, particularly if the fridge ventilation is poor or the vehicle is parked in direct sunshine. They are designed to cool gradually rather than pull down a large amount of warm food quickly.

Good installation and maintenance matter. The exterior vents must remain clear, the burner and flue need appropriate professional servicing, and the door seals should close firmly. If the fridge has become less effective, do not assume it needs replacing before checking these straightforward causes.

Gas use and safety considerations

A gas fridge should only be used with the correct ventilation and in line with the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. Never block fridge vents with luggage, covers or makeshift insulation. Keep the gas system in good order, use an in-date gas hose where applicable, and make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is working.

Most owners turn the gas supply off while driving, and gas must be switched off when refuelling and wherever site, ferry or tunnel rules require it. Your handbook is the best guide for the exact operation of your fridge and vehicle. If you are unsure about the gas installation, arrange a check with a suitably qualified leisure vehicle gas engineer.

Electric compressor fridges for battery and solar setups

Compressor fridges are increasingly popular in campervans, newer motorhomes and caravans being upgraded for off-grid use. Their biggest strength is cooling performance. They tend to chill food quickly, cope well in warmer conditions and continue operating effectively when the vehicle is not perfectly level.

They are also very efficient compared with an absorption fridge running on 12V. That does not mean they use no power. A compressor cycles on and off throughout the day, so the total draw depends on ambient temperature, fridge size, how often the door is opened and how full it is. In hot weather, a poorly ventilated fridge can work much harder.

For a weekend on a good leisure battery, a compressor fridge can be a very sensible choice. Add solar panels, a battery-to-battery charger or regular driving, and it can support longer independent touring too. The key is to treat the fridge as part of an overall power system rather than a standalone purchase.

A lithium leisure battery, for example, can offer useful usable capacity for a compressor fridge and other everyday loads such as lighting, water pumps and device charging. But even a large battery can be drained if the weather is hot, solar input is low and no charging plan is in place. Winter touring needs extra thought because solar generation is much lower.

Compressor models do make a low mechanical hum when the compressor runs. Most people find this unobtrusive, but it is worth considering if you are sensitive to noise or sleep in a compact campervan with the fridge close to the bed.

Choose by the way you holiday

A three-way absorption fridge is usually the more reassuring choice if you regularly stay without electric hook-up and already carry LPG. It lets you conserve your leisure battery for the essentials while still keeping food cold. It is also a familiar solution in many larger caravans and coachbuilt motorhomes.

A compressor fridge is often the better fit if you favour touring pitches with hook-up, use solar power, have a strong battery system or want dependable cooling in summer. It is particularly appealing in campervans, where space is limited and a simpler all-electric setup may be preferable.

Think about your most common trip, not just the occasional one. A couple spending most weekends on fully serviced sites may get more value from an efficient compressor fridge than from gas capability they rarely use. A family touring rural Scotland for a fortnight, moving between low-facility sites, may appreciate the freedom of a three-way model running on LPG.

Check these practical details before buying

Fridge capacity is the starting point. A compact fridge can be enough for two people taking frequent shopping trips, while a family will benefit from more chilled space and a usable freezer compartment. Measure the installation aperture carefully, including depth, door clearance and ventilation space. A replacement fridge that is only a few millimetres too large can create an expensive fitting problem.

Also check your existing services. For a three-way replacement, confirm that suitable gas, 12V and 230V connections are available. For a compressor fridge, look closely at cable size, fuse protection, battery capacity and charging equipment. Long or undersized cables can cause voltage drop, which affects performance and may trigger low-voltage cut-outs.

Energy labels can be useful, but compare them sensibly. Domestic-style figures do not always show how a fridge will behave in a hot awning-side caravan or on a battery-only pitch. Look for realistic information on daily 12V consumption, climate rating, ventilation requirements and the manufacturer’s recommended installation method.

Door hinges matter too. Reversible doors can make a big difference in a narrow galley. Secure latches are valuable on travel days, while removable shelves and salad drawers make loading easier. Small details are often what make an appliance pleasant to use for years.

Get better performance from either type

Whichever fridge you choose, pre-cool it before loading for a trip. Put already chilled food inside rather than asking the fridge to cool a full shop from room temperature. Keep airflow around the contents, avoid holding the door open while deciding what to cook, and use a fridge thermometer so you can see what is actually happening.

On hot days, park with the fridge side out of the strongest sun where possible. Check exterior vents on absorption installations and make sure any compressor ventilation grilles are not obstructed. A cool box for drinks can also reduce constant door opening when everyone is sitting outside.

The best caravan fridge is the one that quietly supports the sort of holidays you want to take. Match the power source to your normal touring routine, allow for the hottest days and give the installation the attention it deserves. Then you can spend less time worrying about batteries, gas bottles or lukewarm groceries, and more time enjoying the view from your pitch.
